Livingmenu for workplaces · Staff canteen

A staff canteen your people actually use

Most company canteens are not empty because the food was bad on day one. They are empty because one vendor with one menu cannot stay interesting for three years. We build yours around a rotating group of hawkers and chefs instead.

We will tell you if an on-site canteen is the wrong fit for your site.

The problem

The canteen re-tender cycle

If you have run a staff canteen before, you have probably been round this at least once.

  1. Year 1

    The canteen opens

One vendor wins the tender and sets a menu. For a few months it is fine, and everyone is relieved the problem is solved.

  2. Year 2

    The menu stops moving

The same dishes come round every week. Staff start walking out to eat, or bringing food in, and the queue at noon gets shorter.

  3. Year 3

    The vendor cannot sustain it

Lower demand means thinner margins, which means less variety, which means lower demand. Quality follows volume down.

  4. Then

    You re-tender

A new vendor, the same single-kitchen model, and the same curve again. The canteen is never quite wrong enough to close and never quite good enough to use.

The single-vendor model is what drives the loop. Changing the vendor does not change the model.

How it is different

One canteen, many kitchens

Livingmenu is a multi-vendor catering platform. Applied to a canteen, that changes what happens when a stall stops performing.

  • Many hawkers, not one vendor

Livingmenu is a multi-vendor platform. Your canteen is cooked by a rotating group of hawkers and chefs rather than a single operator working to a single menu.

  • A line-up that keeps evolving

The cooks rotate and the menu moves with them, with halal and vegetarian always on it. Variety is a property of the model, not a promise a vendor has to keep when margins tighten.

  • A cook who is not working out gets changed

If a hawker stops performing we bring in another. In a single-vendor canteen the only lever is a conversation, and the only real remedy is another tender.

  • Hawker prices, held

The same range your staff pay at a coffeeshop or hawker centre, so nobody is choosing between convenience and cost.

What sits with whom

You provide the space. We run the food.

Your company provides

  • The space — a canteen, cafeteria or pantry area your staff can reach on a break
  • The kitchen and its equipment, and the fit-out of the serving area
  • Utilities for the premises, as the occupier
  • A rough daily headcount and the break times you run

Livingmenu provides

  • Licensing for the food operation
  • Sourcing and rotating the hawkers and chefs who cook
  • Menu planning, pricing and the line-up
  • Running the canteen day to day, including the people on it and the cleaning
  • Ordering, payment and the optional employer co-pay, tracked per person

No kitchen on site, or not the headcount to fill one? Cloud Canteen delivers the same stalls at the same prices instead, with no headcount minimum.

How it works

From a site visit to an open counter

  1. 01

    Tell us about the site

Headcount, break times, the space you have and whether a kitchen is already fitted.

  2. 02

    We assess and quote

We look at what the site can support and come back with a mix of hawkers and chefs, and commercial terms for it.

  3. 03

Cooks are matched to your staff

Chosen for who actually works there — the cuisines, the price points, halal and vegetarian coverage.

  4. 04

It opens, and it keeps moving

The line-up rotates from day one, and we change what is not working rather than waiting for a review.

What it costs

Hawker prices at the counter

  • Priced like a coffeeshop

Staff pay what they would pay outside, not a captive-audience mark-up. A canteen only works if eating there is the easy choice on price as well as time.

  • Optional employer co-pay

Subsidise any share of each meal, tracked per person and billed monthly. A meal benefit that reports itself rather than one reconciled by hand from vendor invoices.

  • Terms quoted per site

What it takes to run a canteen depends on the space, the headcount and the hours. We quote against your site rather than publishing a number that would be wrong for most of them.

FAQ

Staff canteen questions, answered

How is this different from a normal canteen vendor?

A normal canteen is tendered to one operator with one kitchen and one menu. Variety depends on that operator keeping it up, and when demand dips their margins dip with it, so the menu narrows and demand falls further — which is how companies end up re-tendering every few years. We run the canteen with a rotating group of hawkers and chefs instead, so the line-up keeps evolving and a cook who is not performing can be changed without a new tender.

Who pays for the kitchen and the equipment?

The company does. The space, the kitchen, the equipment, the fit-out of the serving area and the utilities are provided by you as the occupier. We take on the licensing for the food operation and run it day to day — the hawkers and chefs who cook, the menu, the people on the counter, the cleaning, and the ordering and payment system.

How many staff do we need for an on-site canteen to make sense?

On-site canteens generally need the headcount to support a kitchen running every day — typically several hundred staff on site. Below that the economics rarely work for anyone, which is why we also run Livingmenu Cloud Canteen: the same stalls and the same prices, delivered to your guardhouse, lobby or pantry, with no headcount minimum and no kitchen needed. Tell us your numbers and we will say which of the two fits.

What do meals cost in a Livingmenu staff canteen?

Meals are priced like a coffeeshop or hawker centre rather than at a captive-audience mark-up. Staff pay for their own meals unless the company chooses to subsidise, and the employer can co-pay any share, tracked per person. Commercial terms for running the canteen itself depend on the site, the headcount and the space, so they are quoted rather than published.

Can the company subsidise staff meals?

Yes. The employer can co-pay any share of each meal, tracked per person and billed monthly, so a meal subsidy becomes a reportable line rather than something reconciled by hand from vendor invoices.

Are halal and vegetarian options available every day?

Yes. Halal meals come from our partnering Muslim-owned stalls, and halal certification is available through those vendors on request. Vegetarian is on the line-up daily at the same prices.

We already have a canteen and a vendor. Can you take it over?

That is the situation this is built for — a canteen that exists but is not being used. Tell us what is in place, what the current arrangement looks like and when it comes up for renewal, and we will tell you honestly whether the multi-vendor model would change anything at your site.

What if our site has no kitchen or not enough staff?

Then an on-site canteen is the wrong answer and we will say so. Livingmenu Cloud Canteen covers exactly that case: daily meals from the same stalls at the same prices, delivered to your guardhouse, lobby or pantry, with no kitchen and no headcount minimum.

Do you run canteens for shift workers?

Yes, including night and rotating shifts. Where a site runs through the night but the overnight crew is too small to keep a kitchen open, night shift meal delivery is usually the better fit — meals arrive at least 15 minutes before the break starts, without the canteen having to stay staffed at 3am.
